Portrait of Alexander Hamilton engraved by Owen G. Hanks (1816-1865). He founded Wellstood, Benson & Hanks (1848-1855). Hanks engraved independently until he joined the American Bank Note Co. in 1859.
This portrait was used on the large-size Interest-bearing Three-year $500 dollar notes of 1864-1865 as well as Tobacco tax-paid stamps of 1869.
