“George Washington” Vignette Proof, BEP, Owen G. Hanks
Portrait of George Washington engraved by Owen G. Hanks (1816-1865). This image first saw use on the 1864 $500 Treasury notes. It later appeared on the US 3 cent third issue Fractional Currency and various tax-paid revenue stamps. Hanks founded Wellstood, Benson & Hanks (1848-1855), and engraved independently until he joined the American Bank Note Co. in 1859.
