#615 very fine or better remainder check payable at the Philadelphia National Bank with a child’s portrait at upper left. Joseph R. Carpenter (circa 1820-94) was a designer and engraver. The 1850s saw Carpenter as a principal of the engraving firm of Toppan, Carpenter & Co. The 1860s had Carpenter in a partnership with engraver John M. Butler. After Butler’s death in 1868, Carpenter headed his eponymous firm that not only prepared United States revenue stamps, but also produced the backs for Fifth Issue 50¢ Fractional Currency notes.
