Joseph H. Schenck, MD, of Philadelphia originated Schenck’s Mandrake Pills in 1836, and later the same year he introduced Schenck’s Pulmonic Syrup and his Seaweed Tonic. The Syrup, for coughs, colds and consump­tion, consisted of wormwood, catnip, tansy, hyssop, horehound, hops, chamomile, senega, elecampane, licorice, gum arabic, brandy and lemon syrup. Joseph H. Schenck, Jr. joined the firm in 1872, and assumed full control of the business in 1875. The firm continued to operate out of Philadelphia as late as 1939.
