RS36b Dr. C. F. Brown, 1c Blue Revenue Stamp

$175.00

Condition rarity of this hard to find proprietary die medicine stamp from 1870.

C. F. Brown is listed in the 1880 New York City Directory as a merchant and manufacturer of syrups with offices at 127 /water St, but in 1870 the Commissioner of Internal Revenue received an order for a private die proprietary stamp for Dr. C. F. Brown’s Young American Liniment. Ward, Southerland and Company of New York City, serving as agents for c. F. Brown and Brown’s Liniment, apparently continued to sell the product at least through 1883. (Holcombe, Henry w., weekly Philatelic Gossip, 33: 432, 440, December 27, 1941)

Description

Size of engraving 191 23mm. A groom leading a prancing horse upon the horizontally lined ground of a circular disk bordered by an horizontally lined band between two colorless lines. This band is inscribed above, “Dr. c. F. Brown’s”, and below “Young American LiniMent.” At top, in a curved, vertically lined label, “U. S. Inter. Rev.”; below, in a similar manner, “One Cent.” The lower inscription is separated between the two words by a large, fancy, colorless numeral of value which extends through the circular band above and into the lower part of the central disk. All of the inscriptions are in colorless, Roman capitals. The ground is so shaded, horizontally and vertically, as to make it appear that the central disk is super-imposed upon a shield shaped tablet, and there are slight, colorless ornaments below the ends of the upper label.
This die was registered, and all business transacted, in the name of Ward, Southerland & Co., 130 William St., New York, N. Y.
