This 19th-century die proof on India paper, printed by the Continental Bank Note Company of New York, features a detailed industrial vignette depicting a large riverfront factory complex. The scene illustrates the height of American industrialization with multi-story masonry buildings, active smokestacks, and a bustling harbor filled with steamships, sailboats, and a small rowboat in the foreground. Such vignettes were expertly engraved to symbolize industrial progress and were frequently used as decorative security elements on bank notes and stock certificates. The fine lines and delicate shading demonstrate the high-quality intaglio craftsmanship for which the company was known during its operation from 1863 until its 1879 merger into the American Bank Note Company.
