This 19th-century die proof on India paper, printed by the Continental Bank Note Company of New York, features a detailed industrial vignette depicting a large riverfront factory complex. The scene illustrates the height of American industrialization with multi-story masonry buildings, active smokestacks, and a bustling harbor filled with steamships, sailboats, and a small rowboat in the foreground. Such vignettes were expertly engraved to symbolize industrial progress and were frequently used as decorative security elements on bank notes and stock certificates.
