Trimmed Large Die Proof of Mermaid in the waves, signed by Lorenzo Hatch, unknown use. Printed on India paper, die sunk to original card. Signature L.J. Hatch SC lightly penciled in at lower right, along with “arranged”.
Lorenzo J. Hatch was a very talented engraver and artist who had an unusual career in the bank-note business. He trained at the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and subsequently was employed at several private bank-note companies in the U.S. before going to China in 1908 to establish the first modern Chinese currency-printing bureau.
