Edward Heaton of New Haven, CT, was a prolific inventor, having to his credit the invention of a cereal food patented in 1860, which he manufactured; but it went without a name until 1875 when it was offered for sale as Imperial Granum, the great medicinal food. In 1881, the IRS ruled that Imperial Granum was a proprietary medicine. Eventually John Carle and Sons of NYC acquired sole rights to Imperial Granum, purchasing it from the Heaton family, and the product was manufactured as late as 1941.
