Geo. C. Goodwin & Co., Patent Medicine Warehouse Advertising Cover

This item is a 19th-century philatelic advertising cover featuring a corner imprint for Geo. C. Goodwin & Co., which operated the New England Patent Medicine Warehouse located at 38 Hanover Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The company was founded by George Clinton Goodwin in 1839 and grew to become one of Boston’s largest wholesale pharmaceutical and drug firms. The left side of the envelope features a highly detailed, circular black ink imprint illustrating an ornate crest for the patent medicine warehouse. The envelope is franked with a single green 3-cent United States postage stamp on the upper right corner.

The envelope displays ink postmarks and historical handwritten postal delivery routes. A circular date stamp from Boston, MA, shows a mailing date of March 25, while an additional circular postmark from Scituate, MS (Massachusetts) shows a date of March 26. The envelope is hand-addressed in cursive to W. E. C. Turner. It includes a handwritten “Forwarded” instruction at the top, showing the letter was redirected from Scituate to Greenbush, Massachusetts.
