Very little is known about the firm of Joseph L Elgin. According to this Phantom Toilet Powder label proof, the product was imported from New Bond St., London. Joseph L. Elgin was born in Kentucky in 1824. In 1857 at the age of twenty, he went into the drug business at George town, Ky. He later engaged in the wholesale drug business in Cincinnati, and finally moved to New Albany, Indiana in 1874. He passed away in 1899 in New Albany.
