RO170d The Standard Match Company

$50.00

Although the Standard Match Co. stamp gives the location as New York, the factory, of the Standard Match Company was actually in Bayonne, New Jersey. Most probably the New York address was that of a business’ office or sales agency. The business was owned by T. C. and C. S. White, who operate a sulphur refinery at Bayonne, where the Standard Match “Company was started as a subsidiary in 1882. The Standard Oil of New Jersey was a close neighbor, and may have inspired the choice of name. The Standard Match business was purchased by the Diamond Match Company in 1883, and the factory was subsequently destroyed by fire.
