RO98a Thomas Gorman & Bro. Match Stamp, invert precancel, plate scratch

$35.00

T. Gorman & Bro. were located at Westville, Connecticut, which was also the site of the match factories of A. Beecher & Sons and James G. Hotchkiss. The Gorman’s set up their business in the summer of 1865 and continued for some 13 years. Thomas Gorman’s brother dropped out sometime prior to 1876; Gorman himself died early in that year or late in 1875, but the business was continued through 1877 by the “Estate of Thomas Gorman” some connection with the operation of the business after Thomas Gorman’s death. In March 1876 the die was altered from “T. Gorman & Bro.” (R097 and 98) to “Thomas Gorman” (R099). The latter stamps were used by the Estate of Thomas Gorman.
