RS61d Cook & Bernheimer, Proprietary Medicine stamp

Martin R. Cook was a New York importer and Jaques A. Bernheimer was in the liquor business when they joined forces late 1876 or early 1877 to form the firm of Cook and Bernheimer. Some years later they concocted a nostrum which they called Sunsmile; by their own admission it was little more than straight whiskey. “Two ounces of straight whiskey is one of the cheapest and best pain-killers known to man”, they advertised. But the product was short-lived, being discontinued in 1883. (Holcombe, Henry w., Weekly Philatelic Gossip, 33: 208, 216, November 1, 1941)
